Melinda --- 189 days ago -

i've never been stationed there but i have a friend who's there now and it seems like she's having SO much fun. I'm so jealous.

Amanda --- 189 days ago -

i'm really excited! i can't believe i'm gonna be living on the beach for 2 years! :) our base before this was in washington state so we deserve some hot weather!

GaryKenyon --- 189 days ago -

You will abso-friggin-lutley love it. It was the best assignment I ever had. They just opened up a nex BX on Andersen right after I left, nopt sure how good it is. If it still sucks for selection you can always drive down to the NEX at the Naval base, their selection is better anyways. If you're going to be living on base you'll love it. You don't have the sh!tty stairwell housing you do here. You'll have a neighbor as the houses are connected but you'll have a nice yard also. If you stay off base, the houses may not look like much, but on the inside they are quite nice. Anything else let me know. This is driving down to Tarague Beach on base, IMO it is the nicest beach on the island. This is Haputlo Beach on the Navy comm activity. It is a nice, secluded beach. Granted it's a hike to get there but it is awesome. Talafofo Bay The old Spanish fort where Magellin first landed. Old Japanese guns Haputlo Beach again One of the waterfalls we always hiked to You will abso-friggin-lutley love it. It was the best assignment I ever had.

wow! i can't wait-we still have 5 months here! is base housing nice? do they have fenced in yards? i wanna go NOW!

GaryKenyon --- 189 days ago -

It is the nicest base housing I have seen of any AF base I have been to. They do not have fenced in yards though. One other thing you may want to know about is that you WILL have a Guam mailing address. They will deliver right to your house but this is a problem because not a whole lot of companies will ship to Guam and if they they will charge you out the a$$.

Amanda --- 189 days ago -

not too worried about the mail issue, our families have been helping us out here, my husband bought a monitor online and they were gonna charge us $75 for shipping but it was free shipping in the states so we just had someone ship to us and it was $25! great job supporting your troops huh!?!? thanks for sharing what you know! now come on august!!!

Here is a pic of typical base housing at Andersen. Pic is to big click this link http://www.guamapartmentfinders.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/DSC007562.jpg Now keep in mind how many dependents you have will depends on the kind of housing you get. The first pic is your typical 2-4 person faily home. The 2nd one of the long houses are usually for 4+ folks

I lived on Guam for 7 years, I basically grew up there. If you don't mind the hot weather, you will love it. It's a very small island so the beach is like less than 20 minutes any direction. Last time I was there was in 2005 visting family and they are definitely building up the bases because of they are transferring a lot of the Marines to Guam. My sister said that they've built up a lot of housing complexes on the economy to support the influx of people. From 1998-2001 my siste and her family lived on the housing in Anderson. They had a spacious 3 bedroom duplex and a pretty good size yard. I can asked my brother, he works on base, about any changes recently on base. Tourism is the main economy for Guam so, if you're looking for stuff do they can probably accomodate you. I can't wait to go back, it's been a while. Also, there are other small islands near by that you can explore and it's affordable. Let me know if you need more info!

Ginee brought up a good point. GO TO SAIPAN!!!

Ginee --- 189 days ago -

The house that GaryKenyon posted is exactly the same type of house my sister lived in. They are not the newest but definitely very well kept.

Amanda --- 189 days ago -

we only have one child and we are reall hoping to get a 3 bedroom, it would be so nice to have and extra bedroom for family when they visit, do you know the regs on housing and how many rooms you get? also, we were planning on selling some furniture and buying new like an entertainment center and dining room set, how is the furniture selection there and how are the prices? how are the rent prices for houses off base? if we can't get a 3 bedroom we might try for off base even though we have always lived on base. are the local people friendly? oh, and how is the shopping? i love shopping! sorry for all the questions!

GaryKenyon --- 189 days ago -

The locals are very friendly. You will at times meet folks who hate that the military is even there and they they are raping the island, but they are few and far between. As for shopping you'll have a fairly decent selection of things. There are 2 malls on the island along with a 24 hour KMart. The prices are going to be higher though simply because it costs more to ship there and they have to mark up the prices to offset it. For example a new XBox game here costs $60, there it's $70.

Ginee --- 189 days ago -

Like Gary said there are 2 malls and a very popular Kmart but the BX in Andersen and at the Big Navy (as the local calls it) has a pretty good selection especially in furniture. I know my sister prefer to buy her furniture and appliances on base. If you prefer high end shopping, just get down to Tumon, this the strip where you will find Gucci, LV, Prada, and other very high end, I can't afford it items but there is nothing wrong with window shopping. Actually when I lived there we preferred shopping on base. There are also a lot of hotels to choose from where they have store and restaurants. If you love food, you will love Guam. The variety is endless and the food is great. It's not the cheapest as Gary mentioned but to eat fine dining at Hilton Hotel is also not going break your bank. You have to go the Chamorro Village, I think on Wednesday nights they have some kinda of flee market and there are different vendors and a chance to try the local foods. You will have to try finadeni (sp) it's a dipping sauce. Oh, talking about it is making me miss home. I'm pregnant too and talking about all the food is making me crave it.

We moved here from Guam!!! *smile* You will find that people are split on it ~ ~ those who love it and those who hate it. One word of advice: GET OFF THE BASE AND EXPLORE!!! The jungles are AMAZING and the beaches are *spectacular*! We loved it. We explored the entire island and boonie stomped every weekend. The local islanders (mainly chamorro's) will give you respect if you respect them. Let me know if you need to know anything. I have TONS of pictures and experiences from there! GET DIVE CERTIFIED AND EXPLORE THE NEIGHBORING ISLANDS!!! You will love it! *smile*

PapaSmurf --- 183 days ago -

Go the Stars and Stripes (paper) site and search "Guam". You'll be able to see what all is going on and is planned for the island! Good luck...Hafa Adai...

Amanda, best of luck! I'm SO jealous! We wanted to get stationed there so badly, but there wasn't a slot on my husband's cycle. We came here from FL and I miss the beach so much and deff wanted a warmer climate. This thread is making me so jealous....enjoy it to the fullest!
