I am sure that many of you have already done the research on this so I will ask here and cheat and not do all the legwork. I am not asking for myself so really don't want to spend hours doing it ;)

Anyhoo--which of the schools on base have the best (ie lowest) rates per credit hour and lowest fees? I looked at a couple of them and they are SO high considering but thought maybe some were much lower I just don't know. I am trying to find out for a friend whose young adult relative wants to take some classes.

I have only taken even my classes via a bricks and mortar school (I fear the schools via the bases-muahahaha) so I have no idea

Bob --- 13 years ago -

The main concern should be quality not cost per credit hour. I have my undergrad from umuc and always found there prices to be very reasonable.

Brasco --- 13 years ago -

I looked at the colleges offered from Ramstein and assume Central Texas College (CTC) will be the cheapest however I bounced all around their site for about 20 min trying to find tuition rates...they seem very careful not to list them. The only reference to the cost refers back to the CTC School catalog which they produce a special one for international locations. And there it states each site is different based upon the contract at the site. Geeesh what a catstrophe; you should probably give them a call tomorrow.

Brasco --- 13 years ago -

....with that CTC is a 2-year JC and offers many of the basic core classes plus several specialized programs. I took alot of my General Ed at CTC, most very easy classes.

I really am not giving them my opinion on the quality just helping them with research. If I were to pick an online program for myself it would not be ANY of the ones offered by the Ed Center.

I do appreciate your input though--it is just not for ME anyhow.

Brasco, thank you for that info--this kiddo is a Texas resident too--maybe that will help.

Lots of good info. Another question is a) what are you wanting to pursue? b) what are my school options and c) is the school selected accredited.

I have been with an online college that I started with at my last employer. It fits my wacky schedule and TDY, but youhave to be disciplined and do the copurse work on your own for the most part.

Bob --- 13 years ago -

since the question has been presented, the important thing to find out is if the college has regional accreditation. if not, the credits probably won't be accepted by a different school if your friend has to change. grad schools won't accept the degree as a basis to continue on to the graduate level. there are 6 regional accrediting boards in the u.s. if the school isn't accepted by one of them i would find a different school. this is partly what i meant by quality over price. not just the teaching/learning environment.

i know you are just trying to help your friend. i'm just adding to the discussion as a whole.

drew66879 does bring up a very good point. what subject does your friend want to study. when you go past the general education requirements you mentioned the major the person selects can limit the college choices.

i've been on this site for 3 years now and there's has never been anyone who has asked more questions than you Kristen. I assume you don't work so I can't understand why you can research yourself. I mean all the time you spend galavanting around Europe you should take some of that time to find your own answers. You remind me of my ex-wife. Thank god my current wife isn't like that. And I may be the only one to say it but I will bet you that I am not the only one thinking this.

CoffeeLuvr --- 13 years ago -

Gee Joseph who pissed in your Cheerios this morning? I know the people here are smart enough to know that with your nasty posts you are just screaming for attention. Perhaps that wife of yours isn't all you claim her to be? Oh, and 3 years my butt....it says you joined 30 minutes ago. So there, that was your 30 seconds of attention...hopefully no one else gives you any here.

Bob --- 13 years ago -

coffeeluvr, i agree...i don't understand the attitude. this is a site to discuss things. i don't see anything wrong with kristien's questions. this is a resource for information and she is using it.

Remember- If you don't mind going to school online ( I did my B.A and now my M.ED) you can get instate tuition in the state that is located on your spouses on your LES as your home of record!

JOSEPHMEAN --- 13 years ago -

There are a lot of people who come on this site that do not make accounts. I have been on here for about 3 years, I have no reason to lie about that. No one pissed in my cherrios, I actually don't like cereal. It's my opinion and I thought it was okay to give opinions. I didn't think we were living in a communistic country.

JOSEPHMEAN --- 13 years ago -

And by the way, I did just have someone send me a private message who agreed with me. I won't call them out like that but I am not the only ""bad guy"" around here.

imhere --- 13 years ago -

LOL @ Josephmean The only thing you can do now is opening a new account and play the game !

Kristen --- 13 years ago -

I am flattered ;)

My suggestion to you Joey is that you block me so I don't ruffle your feathers

I can ask whatever I want. Other people like to find the info out too.

Other people's research is wonderful to share.

I share my own too when people ask

anyhow, I think it is hilarious that you would 'waste your time' to come on here

nope, I don't work, I do some of things for FREE that are good in the community instead :)

I am cool like that

I am asking for a friend and it is for a relative that is here now--trying to find a command sponsored job--so I don't think that part would apply. That is good to know though--SEE, THAT IS GREAT INFO for anyone that reads here and did not already find that out!

she is just getting started (young) so while not the optimal situation--she can take the basics about anywhere to start with

kristen, i don't want to beat the poor old dead horse but...please make sure to make sure she understands about the need for regional accreditation. yes, she can take her basic classes anywhere but if the school is not accredited then the credits she earns probably won't transfer to any school that is accredited. if she gets a degree and wants to continue her education the same thing applies. graduate schools require degrees from accredited schools.

oh, personally i think it's a good thing you're doing. there are many out there who wouldn't take the time to ask the questions to help their friends.

Kristen --- 13 years ago -

I am going to copy and paste what you just said here Bob to them. Very very good points.

I had some problems getting some credits to transfer before. Sucked.

thank you very much
